CARY MADNESS TOURNAMENT RULES
Tournament Rules & Regulations
1. The winner of each game will be the first team to score 15 points, but teams must win by at least two (2) points (capped at 21).
2. 15 minute time limit for each game. The team with the higher score after 15 minutes is the winner. Games tied after 15 minutes will go to overtime. The team scoring the first basket of overtime wins.
3. Game times are listed on all brackets. It is each team’s responsibility to follow the brackets and know their game times. Be on time – arriving more than one (1) minute late results in automatic forfeit.
4. After concluding pool play, the tournament will be single elimination.
5. Teams must have at least three (3) players and no more than four (4). Absolutely no roster changes after the tournament has begun.
6. One team per court must wear pinnies if the teams are wearing like colors (pinnies will be provided).
7. This is a player-officiated tournament. A Court Monitor will be present at each court to keep score and time. Court Monitors are not paid referees and do not call fouls.
8. A coin flip by the Court Monitor will determine first possession of the ball (at the start of each game as well as for overtime).
9. Both teams must sign the score sheets after the game. The winning team must take the score sheet to the master table.
10. The tournament director has the right to assign a referee to a game. The referee will have the authority to call violations and fouls if necessary.
11. All teams and players must display good sportsmanship. Competition is important but please remember to be good sports and keep the spirit of the game in mind. Character counts!
12. Any disciplinary issues will be handled by the tournament director and may result in disqualification (for which no refunds will be issued).
Game Rules
1. Blue lines are out of bounds all the way around.
2. The yellow line is the “clearing” line. All changes of possession (e.g. defensive rebounds, turnovers) must be cleared past the yellow line; defensive pressure is allowed during clearing (i.e. no free backs).
3. One point per basket inside the yellow “clearing” line, two points per basket outside the “clearing” line.
4. Possession changes after each made basket.
5. The ball must be checked by the defense after every dead ball situation. The defensive player checking the ball must be two steps inside the yellow line to give the passer ample room to put the ball in play.
6. The ball must be PASSED into play from the top of the key after each check. Failure to pass the ball into play is considered a violation that will result in the other team receiving possession of the ball.
7. Unless a referee has been assigned to a game, players will call all violations and fouls, none of which will result in free throws / foul shots.
8. Each team is allowed one (1) one-minute time out per game. Teams must have possession of the ball to call a timeout.
9. Players can substitute at dead ball situations only. There are no limits to substitutions.
10. No stalling is allowed. Any stalling will result in the other team receiving possession of the ball.
